NOTE: Their 3rd street location is now closed. Stay tuned for their upcoming pop-ups! Their frozen pizzas are still available for purchase on their website. At this time, they’re only doing deliveries.
Just when you thought pizza couldn’t get any trendier, La Morra Pizzeria comes along to shake things up in the LA pizza scene, and boy, have they succeeded. I thought they really deserved a post of their own given their standout concept and mind-blowingly good pizza pies.
La Morra Pizzeria was founded by Marlee and Zach in 2017 as a portable pizza oven with regular pop-ups at Farmers Markets, restaurants and private events. Their perfectly executed Neapolitan-style pizzas quickly gained a legion of devoted pizza followers. With this being said, I can’t believe I’m this incredibly late to the party.
The toppings are incredibly simple yet packed with so much flavor that it’s hard to believe this pizza was wrapped in plastic in a freezer just before I went to pick it up.
Zach Swemle and Marlee Blodgett originally met in NYC and went on to travel extensively around the world, including Italy. Before moving to LA, Marlee and Zach briefly lived in Charleston, South Carolina. It was during this time that they started making pizzas in their backyard.
“In 2016, Zach built a mobile wood-fired pizza oven-from the bed of the trailer, to the finishing tiles-by hand in the backyard of their Charleston home, while simultaneously developing his recipe for a naturally leavened dough. The two would spend the next year trailing the oven around town, cooking pies and gathering fans before making their way to Los Angeles in the summer of ‘17.” – LaMorraPizzeria.com
La Morra Pizzeria has now two takeout window locations in LA that are decked out in super cool light blue and white checkered walls. No, these are not restaurants! The Silverlake location is strictly for frozen pizza pickups. The location on 3rd Street sells frozen as well as hot pizzas, which are freshly made on the premises!
I personally like the frozen pizza concept. I’m not a fan of picking up hot pizza and taking it home in my car while the pizza is getting cold. Once I get home it’s always a little bit of a hassle to reheat it, and of course, it will not taste as good as a pizza straight out of a wood-fired oven.
I bet you’ve never had frozen pizza of this caliber. I’m going to go out on a limb, but it’s probably one of the best pizzas I’ve had in my life, fresh or frozen. I can’t believe it came out of my oven! What? The instructions are located on the back of the plastic wrap. You just pop it in the oven for 8 minutes at 475 F and voilá! Pizza heaven in the comfort of your own home. The one I ordered was the Frozen Margherita, which is their best-selling pizza.
The bubbly, charred crust, the soft dough, the freshness of the buffalo milk mozzarella and the savory sauce made of vine-ripened plum tomatoes magically transported me to a five-star Italian restaurant.
You can order your pizza online, where you will find all their pizzas as well as a few toppings such as chilies and organic olive oils in glass containers to garnish your pizza.
La Morra Pizzeria has definitely become my go-to spot for those Friday pizza nights.
