When Marianna’s Coconut Cloud smoothie came out in March of 2022, I thought no other smoothie could be as wildly popular, but I was wrong. In June 2022, model Hailey Bieber released her skincare line Rhode. To commemorate it, she partnered with Erewhon to release her own smoothie, the Strawberry Glaze Skin Smoothie. When it was announced that she was coming up with skincare, I couldn’t help but roll my eyes at the release of yet another celebrity skincare line. But, after looking at the pictures of the smoothie and the enticing promo pictures of her signature product, the Peptide Glazing Fluid, it was hard not to bite the bullet and try this smoothie at least once.
Honestly, this branding strategy of celebrities/ influencers releasing “temporary” smoothies is a money machine. I say temporary because Marianna’s smoothie, which was supposed to be released only through the month of March, is now a permanent menu item and has become a money maker for the Erewhon franchise.
Below is a picture of Rhode skincare billboard on Sunset Blvd. in West Hollywood.
I went to the Erewhon Beverly location one weekend. As I was waiting for my smoothie, it was wild seeing the baristas making the Marianna’s Coconut Cloud Erewhon smoothie and the Hailey Bieber’s Strawberry smoothie one after another and lining them up on the counter. Even though Marianna’s smoothie came out a few months ago, people still were ordering it in droves. Since it was a busy day, I waited about 20 minutes.
During this time, other than the Coconut Cloud and the Strawberry smoothie, the baristas made only two drinks that were not those two smoothies! Even though they have a huge menu with more affordable options, yet another $17 smoothie has broken sales records. This just goes to show you how much disposable income some people have in LA.
Hailey also shared on her Instagram page that a portion of the proceeds for this smoothie will go to the Robb School Memorial Fund for those families that were affected by the school shooting in Uvalde, TX, on May 24th.
In all the reviews I’ve read, many people fail to mention the brand of the strawberries that go into the smoothie, which I think is incredibly important to highlight.
🍓Harry’s Berries, a farm in Oxnard, California, produces what some people call the Rolls Royce of strawberries. They’re incredibly expensive and people who swear by them say they’ve never had a bad one. Chef Zen, owner of the ice cream shop Awan in West Hollywood, has a strawberry flavor made out of Harry’s Berries, and told me they have a huge cult-like following.
The strawberries, in my opinion, make up for most of the hefty price tag. I buy strawberries from Whole Foods and trust me, they do not look like the ones from Harry’s Berries. If this isn’t enough, the strawberries were featured in the 2022 Superbowl Commercial. They really are the Chanel of strawberries.
These two ingredients are also in Marianna’s Coconut Cloud smoothie. The Malk almond milk retails for $6 and contains organic almonds, Himalayan salt, and filtered water.
For the Zuma Valley Coconut Cream, they drizzle the cream on the sides of the cups to make the white stripes. This company has its headquarters in the mountains of Malibu.
🍓Neocell Hyaluronic. Yes, hyaluronic acid can be edible. Besides selling it in capsules, this brand also offers a liquid version, which is the one that is used in the smoothie. One bottle retails for $25.94 on Amazon.
🍓Avocado
🍓Dates
🍓Maple syrup
🍓Housemade Strawberry Glaze – The times I’ve seen the baristas making the smoothie, they pulled out a big bottle that read “strawberry glaze”, it’s like a liquified strawberry jam.
🍓Vanilla stevia
🍓Vital Proteins vanilla collagen – Great for hair, skin, nails and joints. The brand’s average price for this product is in the $25 range. You can also add it to your morning coffee.
🍓Erewhon sea moss – The Erewhon sea moss is sourced specifically from the island of St. Lucia. A few of the ingredients that are in the sea moss are amino acids, vitamins, minerals and fiber. According to the Erewhon’s website, you can add it to your meals, or eat it straight out of the jar.
In the first few sips, the smoothie tastes exactly like a strawberry milkshake — it is a very intense strawberry flavor. The taste from the strawberry glaze is also very intense.
Overall, it was sweet, but not overwhelmingly sweet. Then, as I kept drinking it, the sweetness dwindled. In the few times that I’ve gotten the smoothie, I could taste the avocado. It was incredibly refreshing, but there was nothing groundbreaking about the second half of the smoothie. I really wish that burst of flavor from the Harry’s strawberries with the glaze were more present throughout. The texture, just like Marianna’s smoothie, was smooth and very creamy. Although as I kept drinking it, the flavor didn’t blow me away. But it was nice to know that I was drinking all those other expensive ingredients and healthy superfoods.
Unlike the Coconut Cloud smoothie, getting the smoothie to look Instagrammable is a gamble. As you can see in the pictures below, the coconut cream and the strawberry glaze is more abundant. The reality is that nine times out of ten, your smoothie will not look exactly like that. I wish they added more coconut cream in the cup and added more glaze to achieve that vibrant reddish pink color.
When I sat outside, groups of girls would come out with the pink strawberry smoothie in hand. You could almost say this smoothie has gained a cult-following in LA.
Even though in a few cases it failed to deliver the same Instagram-worthy aesthetic, I enjoyed drinking the smoothie a lot.
If you want to recreate the smoothie at home, you’ll spend over $20. Because I don’t drink alcohol when I go out, any expensive drink is a splurge for me. The smoothie is not life-changing, but something about it keeps me going back to Erewhon. Is the smoothie worth it? Considering the top-notch ingredients that go into it, yes. Lastly, in case you were wondering, no, you will not get Hailey’s glazed-like skin after drinking it.
Have you tried it? Do you think it’s worth the price?
