If you love burgers, make sure to read my other post “A Guide to the Best Smash Burgers in LA” here.
There are many good burgers all around the world, but luckily, LA, out of all the cities in the US, boasts the biggest burger scene. After all, worldwide chains like McDonalds, or the beloved In-N-Out have had their origins in Los Angeles! When I lived in Madrid, I loved going out to a diner-style restaurant and eating a good juicy burger. However, the truth is, nothing beats the burgers that you can find in Los Angeles. Think about all the 1950’s restaurants that harken back to the heyday of old-school diners. What were the main stars? Burgers, fries and shakes! Luckily, there are a few diners in LA that still evoke the spirit of a bygone era.
In this post, I will be skipping popular franchises like In-N-Out and Shake Shack. My favorite burger franchise is Shake Shack; it’s pricey but you can’t beat the quality! Although, I’m a little ambivalent about their shakes — sometimes it feels like I’m sucking into a flavored ice cube. But I digress…
Please note that the places on this list are just the tip of the iceberg. If you’re reading and you’re from LA, you will understand how the big size of the city comes into play. It is a blessing and a curse, since it would probably take you at least five years to explore every single burger joint in the city.
A burger in LA is the equivalent of pasta in Italy. It doesn’t matter how sketchy or how touristy the place is, you will inevitably find a drool-worthy burger just about anywhere: a divey pub, a sketchy gastropub, a pop-up burger joint in the middle of the street or even at a 1950’s style diner. In my opinion, LA pays homage to the classic 50’s-style diners like no other city does.
My burger photos are lackluster in comparison to the impressive HD photos you can find online. For visual purposes, as well as to let you appreciate every nook and cranny of the burger, most of the photos you will see on this post do not belong to me. All the credit goes to their respective owners, which you will see in the caption of each photo.
These are the best burger places you will find in Los Angeles:
Yellow Paper Burger
Pop-up
Yellow Paper might be one of the very few quarantine-born burger businesses that didn’t jump on the smash burger bandwagon! Years before the pandemic, Colin and Katie made burgers at home for their friends. But it wasn’t until July 2020, when Colin was laid off from his job, that they started making burgers full-time and selling them out of their home in Monterey Park. It was a hit!
Yellow Paper’s burgers are inspired by some of their favorite places in LA that offer classic California cheeseburgers. These places are the ubiquitous In-N-Out and Yucca’s. The latter is a tiny mom-and-pop Mexican food stand in Los Feliz that has been around for decades.
I went to one of Yellow Paper’s pop-ups in Frogtown. It felt like I was eating in someone’s backyard! In an interview with VoyageLA, Kate said:
“While many burger joints have a delicious burger, what sets us apart is the entire YPB experience – we welcome guests into our world, just as we would welcome friends and family into our backyard for a Sunday afternoon barbecue.”
The burger was very reminiscent of In-N-Out, but much better. It was made with love and care. I also appreciated the intricate attention to detail that went into assembling it. The seasoning of the patty was also on point. All the burgers are made to order and they’re carefully crafted one by one, so don’t get desperate if your order takes a bit long.
For now, Yellow Paper continues to operate through pop-ups around LA. I hope they open a brick-and-mortar in the future!
Trophies Burger Club
519 N Fairfax Ave, West Hollywood, CA 90048
Fairfax Avenue is known for being the mecca of streetwear, and it’s also been named the coolest street in LA by a few publications. In October 2022, Trophies Burger Club was the latest addition to this ever-changing avenue. This old-school, fast-casual burger joint offers classic American burgers, hot dogs, fries and milkshakes! I have yet to go try it, but the times I’ve driven by, there’s always been a line!
Nilly’s Burger Shop
17603 Pioneer Blvd, Artesia, CA 90701
Nilly’s Burger Shop is another quarantine-born business that started out in a backyard. In 2022, they opened their brick-and-mortar in Artesia. Nilly’s prides themselves on making everything from scratch: the meat patties, the pickles, and even the Buttermilk Home Ranch sauce. If you’re looking for a burger that’s simple, fresh and made by true burger lovers, then head over to Nilly’s! The prices are also very affordable compared to many places in LA. A double is $8.
Stout Burgers And Beers
📍Hollywood
📍Studio City
📍Santa Monica
The burgers at Stout Los Angeles are gourmet style and they have so many different options to choose from! If you want to deviate from the classic cheeseburger order, get the truffle shuffle burger! I don’t know if the word delicious will suffice to describe this masterpiece in its entirety. All the ingredients were super flavorful and they complimented each other harmoniously: the patty, the sauteed mushrooms, and the truffle sauce made for a heavenly burger experience. Lucy Hale also mentioned Stout as her favorite go-to burger joint in her “What I Eat In A Day” video with Vanity Fair. I do not drink, but their beer selection is also impressive.
Amboy Quality Meats
📍727 N Broadway No. 117, Los Angeles, CA 90012
One of LA’s most memorable burgers can be found at this butcher shop inside a food court mall in Chinatown. I highly recommend reading the owner’s story. His name is Alvin Cailan and is of Filipino descent but was born and raised in East LA. You can watch him on The Burger Show or you can meet him in person at the shop. He’s really nice and always there, so make sure to say hi! The menu is very simple: four types of burger options with a side of salad and fries. If you’re looking for the perfect smashburger, order the Ordinaire, which comes with a single patty, or the classic double. I ordered the Ordinaire burger, which is your classic smashburger with cheese, pickles, grilled onions, mayo-based dressing and their delicious bun.
I really don’t know what kind of sorcery they did, but that bun was like biting into a cloud. The rest of the ingredients were good, but the main star? The meat. The quality was beyond outstanding. I was struck by the abundance of flavor in one bite. The patty wasn’t overly greasy and the seasoning was pure perfection.
Please note that you have to tell them to add their burger sauce if you order the Ordinaire. On another note, do you love meat and you want to take your burger to the next level? Literally speaking? Then brace yourself for the DH burger.
The Ordinaire and Double burgers already come with a side of fries, which is a plus. Amboys’ fries are considered to be the best fries in town. I’m going to be honest, they were good and crispy but paled in comparison to the burger.
Apple Pan
📍10801 W Pico Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90064
Since all the LA blogs swear by Apple Pan, I decided to finally try out this quintessential burger joint to see what the hype was about. Their signature burger goes by the name of Hickory Burger, and OH MY GOD was it good! The winner for me was the freshness of the beef patty. The amalgamation of the hickory sauce, the ketchup and all the condiments blended together beautifully and exceeded my expectations in every single way.
Also, a big shoutout to the lovely staff and their impeccable customer service! This place seriously cannot get any better. Is it the best burger I’ve ever had? It’s hard to say but it came pretty close. Don’t forget to order a slice of one of their famous homemade pies for dessert! Because of COVID you can’t go inside, but if you look up the photos you will see the interior is a throwback to the 1950’s diner era — the servers even wear paper hats! Apple Pan is truly a blast from the past.
This burger was on Jonathan Gold’s Top 10 burgers in LA. For those who don’t know, Jonathan Gold was one of the most prestigious food critics in LA.
Pie’n Burger
📍 913 E California Blvd, Pasadena, CA 91106
I wrote this same exact review on my post “The Best Restaurants and Coffee Shops In Pasadena”.
This burger joint is a classic in Pasadena! Their burgers and pies are truly something else. The first you will notice is the old-school, retro feel the place has. Pie ‘n Burger has been in business for over 80 years serving up mouthwatering burgers, pies and milkshakes to the Pasadena community. Many families that live in Pasadena can attest to the fact that this burger joint has been a staple in their families.
Pie’ n Burger has also been included countless times on renowned LA blogs as a premier burger destination in LA. The sodas are hand-stirred and they even have an old shake machine! The pies are mind-blowingly good and their wide array of flavors is pretty impressive: dutch apple, lemon meringue, peach and peanut butter are just a few of the favorites. Pie n’ Burger uses the same method of preparation since their conception in 1963. Their classic cheeseburger is a true rendition of the 1960’s California burgers: simple and excellent quality. Keep in mind that the burgers are very big and messy to eat! Whatever is it that you order, do not forgo the pies!! CASH ONLY.
Ercoles 101
📍 1101 Manhattan Ave, Manhattan Beach, CA 90266
Ercoles 101 took me by complete surprise! This dive-bar, located smack dab in the middle of Manhattan Beach Blvd, has truly one of the best burgers I have tried since I moved here. A pretty bold statement I know, but I was so overwhelmed by how good it was. Since it’s a busy location, I was very skeptical about how good the burger would be. Once again, I misjudged a book by its cover. The burger was a solid 10. The quality of the meat, the freshness of the ingredients and the combination of ketchup and mustard was a glorious experience that my taste buds will never forget. The burger had the perfect char and it was gloriously juicy and flavorful. I love the fact that they add the condiments for you and then cut the burger in half, so it’s easier to dive right in! I love ketchup, but I always find it somewhat tedious whenever I have to open the ketchup sauce bag and squeeze it to the best of my abilities in order to achieve that perfect flavorful bridge between the meat and the rest of the toppings. Overall, highly highly recommended. They don’t serve fries, just a bag of Lays potato chips.
Hinano Venice
📍 15 Washington Blvd, Venice, CA 90292
Also in Venice, if you’re in dire need of a good juicy burger, Hinano’s in Venice has you covered.
This no-frills, dive bar with its grungy interior serves up their world-famous cheeseburgers, which have been deemed some of the best you will find in LA. I wonder why it’s not talked about more. Perhaps the location? Do not judge a book by its cover! Hinano Cafe opened up in 1969 and offers live music, confused tourists from all over the world and middle-aged bikers that will make for a great time. CASH ONLY.
Bill’s Burgers
📍14742 Oxnard St, Van Nuys, CA 91411
This was my first time ever at the iconic Bill’s, so I thought he deserved his own thorough review in this post!
Can you imagine the outcry if I hadn’t included Bill’s on the list? I’m glad this post was the catalyst to prompt me to finally go. The first time I went, I drove all the way from Beverly Hills to Van Nuys. I was starving and it left a bad taste in my mouth when I saw the closed sign on a Friday at 1 pm. As disappointed as I was, I decided to give it another try and made the trek up the 405 freeway the following week. I yelped with delight when I finally saw people waiting by the stand.
A quick backstory on Bill Elwell: he’s been flipping burgers at this same establishment since 1965. Wow. The old-school menu also includes hot dogs and other grilled sandwiches. Although it was a 35 minute wait, I didn’t mind this because I watched intently how Bill manned the grill, something he’s been doing for almost a lifetime. I was impressed by the number of people that came out and patiently endured the wait without the slightest shred of annoyance. I could see he was a very loved and respected man among patrons. If you’re a picky eater or in a rush (or both!), don’t expect any special treatment. The sign he has inside on the decrepit cash register warns: “You can’t have it your way, this is not Burger King”. The burger was really good and fresh. It’s on the smaller side so you will not be embarrassed to eat it in public. The meat was not greasy but rather tasty and fresh. It was handmade craft perfection at its finest! After all, he seasons and cooks the patty right in front of you on the griddle. Bill doesn’t make fries, but bags of Lays potato chips are available. If you are really hungry though, I recommend skipping the chips and ordering either two singles or one double cheeseburger.
His ex-wife Hiroko cuts all the veggies and assists Bill while their lovely son takes the employees orders through the window. Given that they are a true family-operated business with only the three of them working, they have to close whenever anyone is not feeling great. This explains why I had previously found it closed on a Friday afternoon. Before you go out of your way like I did, you may want to call the phone number on Yelp to make sure they’re open. It was a wonderful experience and you shouldn’t miss it either.
If you live in LA and have never been to Bill’s before, take advantage of it and pay him a visit because the place will not be around forever. I’m so happy I can finally check this highly regarded burger joint off my list. I will definitely be back! CASH ONLY.
Cassell’s Hamburger
📍Koreatown
📍Culver City
📍DTLA
📍LAX Airport
If you’re a burger lover and you’ve never been to Cassell’s, what are you doing with your life? Cassell’s was founded in 1948 and I love how they have managed to uphold that retro-style 1950’s vibe in a modern space.
Not only do they hit the nail in the head with their scrumptious and drool-worthy burgers, but they also deliver the perfect milkshakes, malts and pies. The burgers are the perfect size and exceptionally well cooked. I would skip the fries and order one of their famous, life-changing, must-try homemade milkshakes. Moreover, the pies, the variety of breakfast items they have and their second most popular menu item, which is their patty melt, are reason enough not to miss this place. They even serve craft cocktails! Their Koreatown location is adjoined to the historic Normandie Hotel, which makes it even more alluring.
Cassell’s hits on all cylinders to bring that perfect dose of nostalgia for that bygone era. If only I had a time machine…
Note: Cassell also offers vegan options.
Father’s Office
📍 Santa Monica
📍 Culver City
📍 DTLA
Imagine how many people would rebuke me if I didn’t include this place! For many years, Father’s Office has been ranked by critics as not only the best burger in LA, but one of the best burgers in the United States. Father’s Office was conceptualized in 1999 by Sang Yoon, who opened the first location in Santa Monica and the Culver City location in 2008. He was actually the first person to introduce the gourmet burger style that is so ubiquitous today.
If you’re used to ordering your burger with substitutions, then this is probably not the place for you. Father’s Office has a super strict non-modification policy. They don’t even allow you to have ketchup on the fries! With so many burger joints cropping up left and right in the LA scene and this new demanding Instagram generation, it’s been quite hard for Father’s Office to keep ruling as the king of burgers as they once did.
The signature burger is their FO burger. The patty is charbroiled, topped with arugula, gruyere, Maytag blue cheese and bacon-caramelized onion to accentuate the flavor of the beef. The bread is a sub sandwich roll with garlic butter, not your typical burger bun.
Hi Ho CheeseBurger
📍 Mid Wilshire
📍 Santa Monica
Hi Ho’s cheeseburgers are one-of-a-kind given the fact that they’re one of the few places in LA that serves Wagyu beef. If you’ve never heard of Wagyu beef before it’s like Chanel in a sea of run-of-the-mill handbags. Wagyu meat is expensive not only because it’s produced in Japan, but because each cow undergoes a series of pampering activities to ensure the best results in the quality of the meat. Imagine a cow spa: they’re massaged, fed cow beer and their stress levels are monitored 24/7. Because each cow gets individual attention from the farmers, the beef is more expensive.
The burger was juicy and amazing in flavor. I could tell that it was top-notch quality meat right there. The Hiho burger has everything you need in a classic cheeseburger, so no need to add condiments or ask for sauces, which is another bonus. It comes with ketchup, “mustard grilled”, onion jam, cheese, lettuce and pickles. The shake was also outstanding. I ordered the mix, which is a combination of vanilla and chocolate, so good! The shake ingredients at Hi Ho are from a farm-to-table creamery in Seattle.
Everson Royce Bar
📍936 E 7th St, Los Angeles, CA 90021
Everson’s burger has been named the #1 burger due to its simple yet high-quality ingredients. Do not expect soggy vegetables or over-the-top condiments. The burger is composed of the best prime beef chuck, Tillamock cheddar and a fluffy, perfectly toasted bun. This hidden gem is in the most innocuous place in LA: the Arts District in Downtown. You might pass this semi-hidden bar in the blink of an eye if you don’t actively look for it once you have parked. It was very reminiscent of NYC. The burger style is upscale gourmet. I cannot recommend this place enough if you’re a burger lover. They say a picture is worth a thousand words. Well, just look at my picture, no filter added.
Dave’s Burger Long Beach
📍 3396 Atlantic Ave, Long Beach, CA 90807
You will not see Dave’s Burger in most of LA’s burger lists. This small 50’s style shack has some of the best burgers I’ve had in LA!! They’re In-N-Out style burgers but ten times better: pure freshness at a stellar price point. I’m also super picky about fries, but these were perfectly executed. They had a nice crispy outer layer and the inside was soft-melt-in-your-mouth that only a few places manage to achieve! There are two ladies that work there who couldn’t be any nicer. Seriously! If you’re ever in Long Beach in need of a delicious burger at an In-N-Out price, you can’t miss Dave’s! Very rarely do I write about fries, but I want to reiterate how good they were, just in case I haven’t made myself clear. I can’t believe I found this place by happenstance.
Pono Burger
📍 829 Broadway, Santa Monica, CA 90401
Pono Burger is famous for their fresh, premium organic burgers but with a Hawaiian twist. Please note that since all the ingredients they use are organic, the price point is higher than your average burger joint. Nonetheless, you will most definitely get what you pay for! Their beef is so unique because it’s organic from pasture raised, grass-fed cows in Eel River, Northern California.
All the ingredients in the burgers are sourced from small, California family farms and ranches, which is great because your burger purchase helps small farms. Their organic shakes are made from milk from the tiny community coastal town of Marshall, near San Francisco. Also, I didn’t mention how cool the tin shack interior is! If you are looking for a place that delivers the perfect burger, look no further. Do not forget to order their organic milkshakes and fries! If you opt for a traditional cheeseburger, order The Classic (Beef).
Tipsy Cow
📍 15005 Ventura Blvd, Sherman Oaks, CA 91403
If you knew me back in 2016, you knew that Tipsy Cow was my go-to burger spot. A friend introduced me to it and we brunched there countless times. I was head-over-heels with Tipsy Cow’s impressive burgers: juicy and cooked to perfection. Also, can we talk about the massive size of the shakes? Wow! I always used to order their classic burger but feel free to venture out and order their lamb-burghini burger, which consists of a house-spiced lamb patty, feta cheese, tzatziki and roasted tomatoes. Although their burgers aren’t massive in size, they are very messy to eat.
They have a very nice outdoor patio.
MVP’s Grill & Patio
📍 5484 E Stearns St, Long Beach, CA 90815
If you’re familiar with Long Beach, you will know that MVP Grill & Patio in Belmont Shore is the place to go for delicious burgers and fries. MVP Grill is family-operated and they’ve been providing the Long Beach community with mouth-watering sandwiches, breakfast burritos, hot dogs and burgers since 1980! All of their menu items are named after famous athletes! The interior is really small, but they have some interesting art on the walls, which makes it more quirky and fun. If you’re like me who likes to keep my burger classic, order the George Foreman I burger. Their portions are big and filling!
able time. CASH ONLY.
Marty’s Hamburger Stand
📍 10558 W Pico Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90064
Marty’s Hamburger is a small burger stand between a fire station and gas station in West LA that has been operating since 1959 and offers the perfect classic American cheeseburger. Amazing service and great food with a wide array of options that include hot dogs, chili fries and breakfast sandwiches. Although the business is super small, they have a handful of tables in the back for you to sit and enjoy your burger.
The Standing Room
📍 144 N Catalina Ave, Redondo Beach, CA 90277
You will be hard-pressed to find someone in the South Bay who doesn’t know about this burger joint. Family-operated, The Standing Room serves delicious gourmet-style burgers at the back of a nondescript liquor store. If you want to order your classic burger, then order the Classic. However, many of the burgers they offer have a Korean influence to their ingredients like the Korean garlic sauce they use in the Dressed Burger or the shishito pepper in the Cash Burger.
Shishito Pepper is a mild chili pepper often used in East Asian cooking. Despite The Standing Room being a meat lover’s paradise, they also offer vegan options such as the Black Bean Veggie Burger and sides like sweet potato fries or brussel sprouts.
Mo Better Burgers
📍 12734 Crenshaw Blvd, Hawthorne, CA 90250
If you’re in the South Bay area and in need of a high-quality burger, go to Mo Better Burger. Besides offering super tasty burgers with grass-fed beef, Mo Better Burger also offers turkey and vegan burgers. The price point is high, but hey, you’re getting fresh, made-to-order, high-quality ingredients. Although Mo Better Burger offers the impossible burger, they don’t have gluten-free bread, so keep that in mind. The place is located at Crenshaw Village, which is a shopping plaza. The interior of the place is very no-frills albeit pristine clean, and the employees working behind the counter could not be any nicer.
Upon doing more extensive research on burger places in LA, I thought: why not go all out and add some of the craziest, over-the-top burger places you can find in LA? Keep reading!
Original Tommy’s World Famous Hamburgers
📍 Multiple locations
Tommy’s has been a burger landmark to the city of LA for over 70 years thanks to their “world-famous” chili burgers. Moreover, Tommy’s is open 24 hours, seven days a week. They have other items on their menu, but people always come back for the chili burger. Depending on the location, some of them may be more crowded than others. The burger is messily delicious with the thick dollop of chili inside. Just to warn you, Tommy’s has zero healthy options, and they don’t even add lettuce on their burgers. It’s all about the chili, which some people say it’s addicting.
Grill Em All Alhambra
📍 19 E Main St, Alhambra, CA 91801
Think heavy metal, truck drivers, bikers, tattoos and humongous burgers. This is exactly what Grill Em All Alhambra is all about. They have some of the most unique burger concoctions, such as the Cowboy From Hell Burger, which includes a fried egg, or Jump In The Fryer, which consists of a beef patty and fried chicken on a waffle bun. Yes, a waffle. Their burgers are gooey, juicy and messy. Some people even suggest bringing a bib. If you have a high cholesterol level or underlying heart disease, Grill Em All is definitely not for the faint of heart (no pun intended).
Oh My Burger Gardena
📍 2142 W El Segundo Blvd, Gardena, CA 90249
Oh My Burger prides themselves on serving the best burger in the South Bay thanks to their premium quality beef and fresh produce they use to assemble each burger with so much care and love. I thought this was a low-key business establishment until I saw that they rank over 60K followers on Instagram!
Besides offering the classic cheeseburger, they’re also known for their crazy combinations, such as their Insta-famous menu item Oh My Luther, which is a doughnut burger. Are you tired of the same old double cheeseburger? Oh My Burger goes all out with a triple beef cheeseburger. Other menu items include shrimp grilled cheese sandwiches, shrimp tacos, shrimp burgers, big milkshakes, taco fries and so much more. They also offer vegan burgers and sandwiches, but expect them to be bigger than your average go-to vegan burger.
Can’t get enough of these places? Here are more!! Am I missing your favorite burger place in LA? Let me know so that I can add it to the list. I’m very old-school when it comes to burgers, so I will be including the most simple burger recommendations you can order at these places. But hey, if you’re feeling adventurous feel free to elevate your burger experience. When it comes to burgers here in LA, the sky’s the limit.
Hawkin House Of Burgers South Central
📍 Watts/Compton
This place is in the hood. With this being said, if you decide to venture out, use common sense, try to go in broad daylight if you’re not familiar with the area, and don’t wear gang colors (red or blue). A pro tip from customers is to order either online or on the phone. Their wait is always really long because yes, it’s that good.
What to order: Fat Burger. The portions are really big so beware!
Rockefeller
📍Manhattan Beach, Redondo Beach, Hermosa Beach.
What to order: Rockefeller Burger. A friend of mine celebrated her birthday on a Tuesday night a few years ago and we had their $1 Burger Tuesday special. It was heavenly. They use Wagyu meat in their burgers, which explained why it was out-of-this-world. As you can see from this post, Wagyu meat is expensive so take advantage of this deal and go there on a Tuesday night! Just an FYI, these burgers are smaller than the burgers on the menu.
Laurel Tavern
📍 Studio City
Laurel Tavern is a well-known gastropub in the Valley, famous for their craft beers and wide array of pub-style juicy burgers, like their Jalapeño Burger and Bacon Bleu Burger. If you’re not feeling adventurous, you can’t go wrong with the Laurel Burger.
Howard’s Famous Bacon & Avocado Burgers
📍Venice Blvd
This old-school burger joint has been in business since 1971.
What to order: Although you can order a classic cheeseburger, their signature burger is, of course, their Bacon Avocado Cheeseburger. They also offer hot dogs, onion rings and beef tacos.

📍Eagle Rock
With its unique, quirky, a-frame roof and eye-catching mid-century design, Oinkster has been praised by renowned LA critics as having one of the best burgers in LA. Oinkster also offers high-quality American classic menu items for under $10. Their burgers are made from freshly-ground Nebraska Angus beef, and their ketchup, mustard and aioli sauce are homemade! Not only do they make their own regular ketchup sauce, but they also make Chipotle ketchup and spicy ketchup.
What to order: the original cheeseburger and their ube shake
