Little House Confections has permanently closed đ Luckily, I found another places, 4th Baker in Santa Monica and the IG account @OliveAtFirstBite.
Iâm not the kind of person who is plugged into every single food trend, but in 2020, during lockdown, it was hard not to escape the omnipresence of banana bread. What people outside of LA may not know is the cake that became a viral sensation among celebrities, influencers, and LA-based Tik Tokers: the âBomb Ass Olive Oil Cakeâ.
Founded by Liz Roth and Jaymie Wisneski, Little House Confections was born in April 2020 as a result of the pandemic. Liz started baking and decided to send a cake to one of her celebrity chef friends. She loved it so much that Liz and Wayne decided to keep making more for charity purposes. The name Little House Confections originated from their small home kitchen.
Through word-of-mouth, Little House Confections started getting their name out there. Big things didnât really start happening until her friend Simone Harouche, a popular interior designer and stylist friend of Kim Kardashianâs, bought a cake for Kim.
Then, actress Laura Harrier did her photoshoot for Harperâs Bazaar in her home wearing a boujee Louis Vouitton dress holding the signature Bomb-Ass Olive Oil Cake. I canât think of a better way to go viral!!
In the interim, more celebrities were also posting about Little House Confections on their Instagram stories. However, Liz says that as cool as being viral has been for the brand, the best thing of all is the charity purpose behind. When Little House Confections was born in 2020, the goal was to raise money and awareness for Covenant House California, a non-profit youth shelter for homeless kids.
âEach month, a portion of our profits is donated to a different local charity in the effort to support our community. The cornerstone of LHC will always be charitable giving. We feel so honored not only to put smiles on people’s faces, but to give back in the process.â – Littlehouseconfections.com
I went to their flagship location on 3rd Street and it was beautiful as expected. I bought the smallest cake, which sells for $15, but itâs a tad bit small and youâll end up wanting more. If you know youâre going to love it, then get the medium, which will last you for a few days. Heed my advice! (This location is now closed)
âRoth, who spent years perfecting the recipe, claims the moisture level in the cake coupled with the local ingredients make it addicting. âEven if you eat it three days later, the moisture content is so high that every bite tastes like a spongy, citrusy, olive oil slice of heaven.â Excerpt from HarpeersBazaar.
The ingredients are super simple: extra virgin olive oil, gluten-free flour, fresh squeezed oranges, orange zest, vanilla, sugar, eggs, baking powder, baking soda. Itâs also dairy-free, which explains why it’s so incredibly light.
When I first bit into it, I wasnât blown away by its intricate flavors. Again, the ingredients are really simple, so itâs not like youâll be eating a delicacy, but I was pleasantly surprised by how delicious it was. The perfect words to describe it are: spongy, fluffy and light. It was amazingly soft on the inside and had a slightly crunchy perfect exterior. I did not detect the taste of olive oil, but I did notice the subtle nuances of the orange. Although in the pictures it may look dry, it was actually moist and flavorful. It wasnât overly sweet and after I finished it, I did not feel heavy or full. Usually, when you eat cake, you can feel it in your stomach long after youâve had it. Not with the Bomb Ass Olive Oil Cake!
After I had the small cake, I was thinking about when I should go back to buy the medium-sized one. I was hooked and I did not expect to like the cake as much as I did. Like Roth said in the interview above, you will be addicted to it! A few days after, I went back for the medium-sized Bomb Ass Olive Oil Cake (pictured above).
As good as their Bomb Ass Olive Oil Cake is, be sure to also check out their amazing cake repertoire, which includes a lavender oil olive cake and a bomb ass birthday cake topped with frosting and sprinkles! If youâre a first timer, I would suggest getting started with the original so you can see what all the fuss is about.
As I was writing this post (March 2021), they released their Tie Dye The Way To My Heart cake. The frosting is truly stunning.
To top off my amazing experience, when I tagged them on my Instagram, they couldnât have been nicer and more engaging. The employee at the store was also really nice. Given their hype and immense popularity among celebrities, this was a breath of fresh air. No snobiness.
They have just started doing deliveries to Orange County once a month. Unfortunately, they don’t ship nationwide but if you ever come to LA, go to the store!
Little House Confections is also available through Uber Eats, Postmates and Chownow. (Los Angeles only).
The address is 8022 W 3rd St, Los Angeles, CA 90048.
