Last week, the millennial cult-favorite brand Glossier announced their newest skincare launch: Milky Oil. Glossier states that its “perfectly-proportioned combination of micellar water and weightless oil is the strength behind Milky Oil’s dissolving powers”. It claims to melt off even the most stubborn waterproof makeup in the most gentle way.
I, like the rest of the girls who wear mascara on almost a daily basis, struggle to take it off at the end of the day. One swipe of micellar water or cleanser alone is not enough, so you have to go over the lashes a handful of times to completely remove everything – and even when it looks like everything is off, some annoying residue will still be left behind.
The struggle is real. Every girl knows the hassle of taking off mascara. Sometimes I use a sample size of Tatcha’s cleansing oil, but I don’t use a full-size oil cleansing product, which I probably should. So naturally, when I received the e-mail about this new launch and after seeing this video, it was a no-brainer. I couldn’t contain my excitement to try it out and went right away to the Glossier store on Melrose Place.
Application
First of all, the packaging is beautiful: the classic millennial pink that has become the backbone of the brand.
I applied the product the same way as the girl on the video. I also watched Byrdie’s beauty editor Lindsey Metrus try it on Byrdie’s IG stories and she said the key is to press, hold and wiggle. I gave it a good shake and proceeded to dispense the product on a cotton pad. I gently pressed it against my eye for a good 10 seconds, wiggling it making sure the lash root was properly getting fully soaked in the Milky Oil. After I rubbed it off, my eye was completely makeup-free – or so I thought. I repeated the same application process on the other eye and went one last time over each eye.
When I go to bed, I have to make sure that all of my makeup is completely off, which is why I always dispense Bioderma on a Q-tip and rub it along my lashes before or after cleansing to make sure the stubborn mascara is completely off. To put Milky Oil’s claims to the test, I did this. To my disappointment, the Q tip came out with a big black chunk of mascara, which meant that the product was not as miraculous as I thought it would be.
The next day, I applied a different mascara and I repeated the same application process on both sides. It’s nearly impossible to get everything off after one swipe, so I went over it 2 times on each eye. After that, I grabbed a Q tip and added three drops of Bioderma and….*drumroll please* there was still a lot of leftover mascara.
Milky Oil is formulated with the following conditioning ingredients: Pro-Vitamin B5 and Comfrey Root Extract. I can’t pinpoint which one caused this, but after each use, my vision was slightly blurry. There was no irritation whatsoever, but I just wanted to point it out. I would also like to add that I have very sensitive eyes to the point where I don’t even use eyeliner on my waterline because it gets super watery. This blurriness doesn’t happen when I use the Milky Jelly Cleanser or Bioderma. Every product is different and we all react differently to certain things. For example, a few months ago I bought Clinique’s highly hyped “Take The Day Off” cleansing balm and had to return it two days later because not only did it made my vision blurry after I used it, but it irritated the hell out of my eyes. I kid you not – my eyes were still red after 10 minutes.
Update: I just read the full review on Byrdie.com by Lindsey Metrus (read it here) and I think I have found the culprit: “I dove into the ingredients and questioned sodium benzoate, which, after some research, is a preservative that has been linked to irritation.”
Final Thoughts
🌸As much as I love Glossier, Milky Oil doesn’t make the cut for me. There are many products that I will continue to purchase from Glossier over and over. I’ve been using their cleanser for almost two years, Cloudpaint is a game changer as far as blushes go, and Generation G lipstick in “Crush” has become a staple in my everyday makeup routine, as well as Boy Brow.
🌸Is the milky Oil formula game-changing? No. Whenever I use my sample size Tatcha oil cleanser, I can see the leftover mascara dripping down my face. Oil is a well-known powerful mascara remover, and I don’t usually use oils to remove mascara, which is why this product enticed me in the first place.
🌸Despite the name, Milky Oil doesn’t have an oil-like consistency but more like that of
On top of that, in just one use, it already feels like you’re using way too much product. It retails for $12 and you get 3.4 fl oz (100 ml). Glossier stated on their Instagram that the product is targeted to smaller areas like the lips and the eyes. I love you Glossier, but for two dollars more, I can get a 16.7 fl oz (500 ml) bottle from Bioderma.
If you’re looking for a cheaper oil alternative, organic coconut oil is the cheapest of them all.
I hope this review was helpful! If you’re reading this and you’re itching to try it, I say give it a shot! Trying it out at the store will not be enough. When I was there, I had a few swatches on the back of my hand and Milky Oil removed everything in one swipe. This might be convincing at first, but you actually have to try it and test it out at the end of the day to see how it fully performs on waterproof formulas.
Overall, my love for Glossier remains intact. I can’t wait to see more new products this year and I enjoy witnessing their expansion worldwide, reaching out to makeup newbies and especially people that desperately want to try out their products but can’t because they live in a country where Glossier doesn’t ship.
PS: Just as I was about to post this, Glossier announced on their Instagram “Glossier Play”: “After two years in the making, we can’t wait for you to see, touch, hear, swatch, and play with what’s to come.” Glossier Play will drop sometime in March. Will it be a new makeup line? Glossier fans are speculating as to what this launch will be and I’m ready for it! As always, make sure to check out my blog for a full-on detailed review!! In the meantime, you can follow Glossier Play IG account, which has already racked up thousands of followers in a matter of just one day.
