I can’t believe it took me so long to try them out!! If you’re looking for a nice change from your gym and usual workout routine, Santa Monica stairs is the place to go.
Note: there are two different flights of stairs: the concrete stairs, which are much easier, faster and less challenging and the wooden stairs, which are 100% more challenging and will leave you drenched in sweat. These are the ones I’m going to talk about.
Located on Adelaide Dr, this place offers spectacular panoramic views of the Palisades, luscious green foliage and the beautiful blue Pacific Ocean.

The first time I came here, I did 3 sets; second time, I challenged myself and did 5 sets up and down. After one set, once you get back to the top, you’ll feel like you’ll pass out as the flight closest to the top is the steepest. I felt like my heart was going to come out of my chest. Make sure to have a good breakfast/lunch prior to coming here or you’ll pass out.
I love how quiet it is. It’s located in a residential area surrounded by spectacular houses, away from the hustle of Third Street and Santa Monica Beach. The place is rarely crowded and people are super courteous and quiet. Since this is a challenging workout, you won’t see much of a scene like selfie-takers or girls in full on makeup talking out loud. People there are serious about their workout. I was in awe to see how some people (obviously regulars) went up and down the stairs with such ease and effortlessness. Even if you’re fit, you’ll feel out of breath if you’ve never taken the stairs.
As I said earlier, I did 5 sets and took about a 5-minute break in between. My favorite cardio workout is Rise Nation so this definitely reminded me of it minus the steepness. It’s crazy how different the difficulty is between working out indoors and outdoors.
After this workout, I felt challenged and energized. Fast-forward to the next day, I couldn’t even get out of my bed. It was a feel-good burn but it was the longest soreness I’ve ever had in my life. My thighs and calves were on fire for the next 4 days.
Tips:
-Make sure you have a REALLY good stretch before, during breaks and after taking the stairs.
-Bring plenty of water. PLENTY!!!
-Listen to your body. The stairs are super challenging and you’ll definitely experience shortness of breath and rapid heartbeat. Take as many breaks as you need and don’t push it further if you’re not feeling well.
-Everyone is very respectful and quiet so be considerate of others.
-Give yourself a well-deserved pat on the back! You made it!
While I was sitting taking a break, an amusing sight ensued: a mom and daughter in full fitness mode drove off in their Mercedes after one set.
What’s your favorite outdoor spot in LA to get a killer workout? I have yet to go to Runyon!! Topanga is another of my top-favorite hiking spots. Let me know!
