Marianna Hewitt, Hailey Bieber and now Kourtney Kardashian Barker. Since the launch of the Coconut Erewhon Smoothie, which broke sales records, Erewhon smoothies have become somewhat of a cult. Erewhon has also released different smoothies with smaller influencers such as the Summer Mermaid Smoothie, a collab with wellness influencer Rebecca Leigh. One day, when I was about to cross the street on Abbot Kinney Boulevard, a girl next to me was holding a beautiful orange reddish smoothie that had the Erewhon logo. I asked her, “What’s smoothie is that?” She very enthusiastically said, “It’s the Turmeric Crush smoothie. It is the best!!” Her boyfriend politely nodded.
Every time I walk nearby an Erewhon, it’s a common sight to see groups of girls laughing while holding their Hailey Bieber or Marianna smoothies. A skincare Youtuber traveled to LA on a business trip two months ago. After her trip, she uploaded a video of her Hailey Bieber smoothie review. She said that the cashier told her that some people come in every day for that smoothie, while others order 10 at a time for takeout.
On October 17, Erewhon dropped the Poosh smoothie by Kourtney Kardashian Barker, available at all Erewhon locations until November 15th. If it’s past the date, don’t worry, you can still get it if you ask for it at their Tonic Bar. The smoothie retails for $18, a dollar more than the two other popular collaborations.
Named after Kourtney’s lifestyle platform, the black and white dripping smoothie is goth-looking and has a rock edge to it. Indeed, this is very fitting considering Kourtney has been leaning into blacks and gothic-style clothing since she started dating Blink-182’s drummer, Travis Barker. Additionally, the release date was just two weeks before Halloween — perfect timing!
The following content, which provides a very thorough breakdown of the ingredients, has been taken off of the Poosh website:
“Harmless Harvest Coconut Water: Sweet and refreshing, coconut water contains hydrating electrolytes, like potassium and manganese.
Harmless Harvest Vanilla Flavored Yogurt Alternative: This dairy-free yogurt is made from organic coconut meat and contains live and active cultures, so it supports gut health.
MALK Almond Milk: Made with just three simple ingredients—filtered water, organic almonds, and Himalayan pink salt—this almond milk is our go-to.
Four Sigmatic Sweet Vanilla Protein Powder: Good-for-you ingredients abound in this organic protein powder. Hemp, pumpkin seeds, coconut, chia, and peas are the plant-based protein; ofc, the brand’s signature ’shrooms also make an appearance in the blend to help support brain function, immunity, energy, and stress response.
blk. Fulvic Drops: Fulvic drops are flavorless and infused with over 77+ trace minerals, antioxidants, amino acids, and electrolytes. Fulvic trace minerals are anti-inflammatory super-nutrients that boost your digestive health, support your immune system, detox, and replenish your body for optimal health.
NeoCell Hyaluronic Acid: HA isn’t just for topical products; this supplement helps hydrate and nourish skin from the inside out.
Zuma Valley Coconut Cream: This cold-pressed coconut cream is low in both sugar and carbs, and it helps give the smoothie its super creamy texture.
Schizandu Organics Activated Hardwood Charcoal Powder*: This food-grade charcoal helps promote detoxification and improve digestion. It’s also what gives the smoothie its unique coloring.
*This product is highly absorbent and may reduce the effectiveness of some medications or nutritional supplements.
Organic Maple Syrup: A healthier alternative to refined and artificial sweeteners that’s lower on the glycemic index and contains antioxidants.
Organic Cacao Powder: A good source of iron, magnesium, and potassium, cacao powder also contains anti-inflammatory phytonutrients called flavonoids.
Organic Avocado: Ofc avocados had to make an appearance. They’re packed with fiber, healthy fats, potassium, and vitamin C.
Organic Blueberries: These little berries contain tons of antioxidants and phytonutrients, which help fight oxidative damage and improve digestion.
Organic Banana: A smoothie essential that is full of vitamin C, B6, and magnesium.”
It was a very gloomy day in LA when the smoothie was released on Saturday, October 17. I went to the Studio City location. When I got to the counter, of course I saw the Coconut cloud and the Hailey Bieber smoothie being served.
The smoothie is so pretty to look at! After snapping a few pictures, the moment of truth finally came. I took the first sip. All I could taste was the Zuma Valley Coconut Cream and the earthy flavor from the charcoal.
I kept drinking it, but I didn’t get hints of any other ingredient: just straight coconut cream and charcoal. Compared to my experiences with the other smoothies, I was fairly disappointed with this one.
But before my final verdict, I wanted to give it another try, so I went the next day to the Silver Lake location. There was a girl ahead of me who also ordered it, but the one being ordered the most was Hailey Bieber’s.
This time, whenever I sipped the charcoal, I got a very strong taste of the organic berries and very small hints of the banana and avocado.
I’ve seen on Instagram people say that this is by far the smoothie with the best ingredients.
The other two smoothies were more fun and less serious: in the strawberry smoothie, the flavor was very reminiscent of a strawberry cheesecake, and in the coconut cloud smoothie, the blue hues created a really cool marble effect. In this smoothie, the star of the show is the charcoal, an active multi-purpose ingredient helpful for curing many ailments, whitening your teeth, mud masks, and in this case, detoxing your digestive system.
When ingested, activated charcoal absorbs toxins in your digestive tract, which is why you shouldn’t drink the smoothie if you’re taking any medications, especially birth control pills. Prior to trying the smoothie, I wish I had done my research on activated charcoal. This might be TMI, but a side effect that I didn’t know was that your poop will turn black and scary looking. When this happened to me a day and a half later, I completely freaked out and started Googling “what happens when my poop turns black?” I was shaken with fear by the prospect of possibly having an ulcer! Then, I came across the word charcoal and it all made sense. But it took several days for the black color to be completely gone. I read online that black stools mean the charcoal has eliminated toxins and bacteria in the digestive system.
There’s no doubt that the smoothie is very Instagrammable, but flavor-wise, it’s nothing to write home about. While the Hailey Bieber’s and Marianna smoothies had zero effects on me, the Poosh smoothie definitely did!
Additionally, a downside of drinking this smoothie is that your teeth will turn black. Not ideal if you’re on the go or you’re meeting up with someone. Charcoal acts as an excellent tooth whitener, but if I’m using one, I would like to do it at home, not in public as I’m going about my day.
On Instagram, Kourtney mentioned that she would be getting one Poosh smoothie everyday until its “final date” on November 15th.
Unless you’re heavily into wellness and everything detox-related like Kourtney is, I wouldn’t recommend this smoothie. Drinking Marianna’s smoothie provided a fun and enjoyable experience and with the Hailey Bieber smoothie, people tried to achieve Hailey’s glazed-like skin, and with the Poosh smoothie… you’ll get a deep gut health cleanse. It might be too early to say and I might be completely wrong, but it’s hard for me to picture a group of girls under 20 with the Poosh detox smoothie. Many young girls deeply admire Hailey Bieber; whether it’s her style, her skincare line, her Youtube channel or her relationship with Justin. I like the Kardashians, but when I think of Kourtney and Poosh, I think of an entirely different demographic, which is why I don’t think this smoothie will have the same groundbreaking sales effect as Hailey’s smoothie did.
Have you tried the Poosh smoothie? Will you be getting it?
